Since 2015, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has awarded $116.3 million in grant funding with $203.2 million in matching funds to 64 dairy digester projects across the state. These projects, part of the Dairy Digester Research and Development Program (DDRDP), will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from manure on California dairy farms. Many recent grant awardees have been working to build clusters of projects that leverage multiple dairies located near each other, capturing biogas generated in anaerobic lagoons, and converting it into renewable compressed natural gas that can be injected into pipelines. These projects focus on transportation fuel and along with other systems that generate electricity they’re leading the nation in reducing dairy methane emissions.
